CAMBRIDGE STUD NORTHLAND BREEDERS STAKES
Group 3 – Three-year-old – 1200 metres
The Cambridge Stud Northland Breeders Stakes is the first three-year-old black type race of the season and will be run in 2023 for a stake of $100,000 on Saturday August 19th. The race is now conducted in mid-August with the later start of the Hastings Carnival, but also last year it provided a great starting point for an early and successful Melbourne spring carnival for Lickety Split.

Commencing in 1989 the event was run as a two-year-old race in late July and the early winners included very smart horses like Bundy Lad, Awesome Ways, and Sunline but it was being considered for downgrading from its Listed status in 2009-10 seasons.
By shifting to later in the year, early September, in 2011 and being for three-year-olds, the race quality has improved and performed consistently well enough to be upgraded to Group 3 status in 2017.
In 2020 and 2021 the race was held at the Te Rapa racecourse due to the Covid restrictions on travel in those years.
