Bill Colgan / Monday, 5 April 2021 / Categories: Latest News Local trainers gearing up their stables for the Ruakaka season that commences on Wednesday April 14th. Horses in training have made a rebound following the removal of the racing dates from the Club in 2020 by NZTR. Even at this early stage of autumn there are just over seventy horses in work at the track from ten different trainers. The first race at Ellerslie on Saturday saw the local stables of Chris Gibbs and Rae Racing grab the trifecta. Today there were 29 heats for the trials at Ellerslie with the local apprentice Kelsey Hannan winning her first trials when successful on Kaharau and Eva James for the Rae Racing stables. The local horses doing well at the trials included Jaydeear for Ric Wells, Igottadoitmyway for Kim Knight, and Krystal Williams-Tuhoro and Kenny Rae had three winners in Zelenski, Eva James and Kaharau. The Wednesday meeting on 14th April may be a little light in numbers because there are four other northern region meetings that week with Te Aroha on Saturday, Counties on Sunday, Matamata on Friday and Te Rapa on Saturday 17th.
